NORTHWESTERN SQUASH

Northwestern Squash Competes in Navy Invitational

The Northwestern Undergraduate Squash Team travelled to Annapolis, Maryland this past weekend to play matches against Navy (varsity), Columbia (club team but will be varsity starting in 2011), Hobart (varsity) and George Washington (varsity). Peter Kamm (our #2) had not completely recovered from breaking his hand four weeks ago. He tried to play against Hobart, but was not yet healed enough to play at his usual level. While this significantly weakened our team, we still still had a strong set of performances: NORTHWESTERN VS NAVY (L: 0-9): Navy is currently ranked #12 in the College Squash team rankings. Nonetheless, we had competitive matches with Navy at most positions. Junior Eugene Kim (#3) and Freshman Will Benedict (#5) both won games from their Navy opponents, and Freshman Jay Dalal (#1) lost a close 9-6, 9-5, 9-5 match to Nil Mattsson who is ranked #50 in the Individual College Squash Rankings. Jay Dalal is currently ranked #88, and he is ranked #21 in the country among freshmen.

NORTHWESTERN VS COLUMBIA (W: 9-0): Northwestern was strong on Saturday morning against Columbia (ranked #32 in college squash). We won all matches.

NORTHWESTERN VS HOBART (L: 5-4): Hobart (#28 in college squash) has been a traditional squash power for many years. We have had a good rivalry with them for the past few years. Unfortunately, they slipped by us one more time. Will Benedict (#6) was dominant winning 3-0. Juniors Akhil Daswani (#3) and Eugene Kim won their matches 3-1, and Sophomore Dan Wolf (#8) was in a close match when his opponent had to default. Junior Andrew Park (#5) lost a very close 3-2 match while Jay Dalal (#1) and Senior Tom Hughes (#9) lost their matches 3-1. Senior Peter Kamm (#2) tried to play his match, but his hand was not yet strong enough and he was not competitive. His opponent was a player that Peter is ranked much higher than, and thus if Peter was health, we would likely have won this match.

Northwestern vs George Washington (L: 2-7). George Washington is currently ranked #25 in college squash but they are expected to move up in the college squash rankings with five new freshmen in their starting lineup. Pre-match predictions were that, without Peter Kamm, we would lose this match 8-1. We did better than expected losing 2-7, and Dan Wolf (#7) nearly won his match losing 3-2. Winners were Jay Dalal at #1 (3-0) and Will Benedict at #5 (3-2). Other notable performances were Akhil Daswani (#2) and Eugene Kim (#3) each losing 3-1.

The strongest performance of the weekend was by Will Benedict who won three of his four matches and won a game off of the Navy #5. Our next matches are at home against Notre Dame and Purdue on Saturday, Jan 24.
