Junior SquashLake Forest Squash Hosts 2008 ISRA State Junior ChampionshipsBy: Kim Tunney Photo credits: Kim Tunney Over three dozen junior players converged upon the four courts at Lake Forest Squash to test their racquet skills and compete in the Illinois Squash Racquets Association 2008 Junior State Championships March 1-2 held at the Lake Forest Recreation Center . Five age divisions were contested bringing players in not only from around the state but from as far away as Atlanta and Wellesley , Massachusetts . In the Boys Under 19 division, Atlanta ’s Alex Hoffman beat Lake Forest ’s Alex Heddle, #2 player on Lake Forest Squash High School team, by controlling the ball and forcing Heddle to retrieve at great pace. Hoffman plays #1 for Westminster Academy . Garrett Pannier (#3 LFSHS) and Jacob Weiner (#1 LFSHS) put in good performances through quarterfinal play in the division. Alex Demeulenaere, from the Latin School of Chicago, beat William Duckworth from Lake Forest in the Boys Under 15 round robin. Tomas Kratka, Robbie Baldwin and Patrick Ahern competed in the division and gained valuable tournament match experience. Carolyn Gillette, from Lake Forest , won the Girls Under 15 round robin without loosing a point to either opponents Caroline Duckworth or Jackie Edelson. Lake Forest Squash welcomed back Jack Herold, who has played in the Lake Forest Squash public junior program since age five and won the Boys Under 13 division. Herold now resides in Chicago and plays at the University Club. He beat Massachusetts ’s Blake Gilbert-Bono in the final without dropping a game the entire tournament. Herold, currently ranked #20 in the nation, will compete in Philadelphia at the USSRA Junior Nationals. Andrew Strudwick and Will Gregg were also standouts in the division by making it to the semifinals. Many promising players worked through the draw including Owen Platt, Greg Swenson, Asher Rothstein, Billy Bauder, Hunter Johnston, Dereck Goldstein, Brian Ahern, Philip Demeulenaere and Nicolas Read. A Boys Under 11 round robin showcased future star talent from Peter Jannotta, Ian Strudwick, Luke Bauder, Harry Larson and Ford Johnston.
